Biography
Nancy Chen (she/her) was born in China and immigrated to Canada when she was one and half years old, and grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. Nancy was diagnosed with autism when she was five years old.
She has loved colouring and drawing since she was little. Art-making is a way for Nancy to process, interpret, and communicate her experiences and to best understand the world around her. Her art practice is fuelled by curiosity and playfulness.
Drawn to the bright colours and bold strokes that acrylic paint allows her to accomplish, she paints what she observes. Her subjects are often the paths of her neighbourhood, the flowers in her garden, the view from her window and the way light filters through trees on her walks. Nancy also has a collection of nature and animal books and encyclopedias that she takes inspiration from. Combining her observations with photographs and reference books, Nancy works intuitively to compose her art pieces.
Nancy received a Certificate of Completion (2026) for auditing the Bachelor of Arts program at The King’s University, where she enjoyed a variety of arts courses, such as sociology, language arts, history, mixed media, and more! Nancy has also studied art through both private classes and the City of Edmonton for over 10 years, experimenting with various artistic mediums.
Exploring nature and music with her friends and family are Nancy’s favourite activities. Nancy enjoys camping in the mountains, taking walks during sunny days and listening to country songs. Her passions and artistic endeavours are supported by her loved ones.
